Conn. prisons cancel visits as Irene approaches
August 26th, 2011 | by Mitchell Bennett |Connecticut’s prisons have cancelled visiting hours Sunday in anticipation of poor road conditions due to Hurricane Irene.
Department of Correction Commissioner Leo Arnone says he doesn’t want anyone put in danger trying to reach a prison to visit an inmate during the storm, which is expected to affect the Northeast on Sunday.
About 17,600 prisoners are incarcerated in Connecticut. Arnone says people can check the department’s website or call (860) 692-7780 to find out when visiting hours will be restored after Sunday.
The department also is moving the 16 horses and two goats that inmates care for at the Second Chance Barn in the Niantic section of East Lyme. That recuperation program for abused animals has been in place since 2003 in collaboration with the state Department of Agriculture.
